Testing the New Tracking Drone

08 | Oct | '24

This morning, my goal was to test my new toy, a DJI Mini 4 Pro camera drone. The Butte area has some airspace restrictions so it complicated my drone test a bit but I got my first vids and was happy. I began my ride from the trailhead,  I climbed to the Winter Traverse, made a sample video on the double track and then over to the Butte Road to get to the summit. I tried one more vid on the climb but software stopped the tracking.

After padding up at the summit, I rode down two hundred yards past the fallen tree to get into the open ridge line and set up the drone for a downhill shot. I was able to get about a minute of video before restrictions or software lost me and the drone hovered in place. I was happy with the test and put the drone away for the rest of the descent.

The downhill trail is very dry and could use a good raking about halfway down between 2400’-2800’. It was a memorable ride. The Mahogany and Merlot boat festival was going on down on the lake and the vintage hydroplanes were going around the race course on the south end of the lake.

I will figure out the drone capability and show you future footage when I figure out all the settings.  Trailforks ride log is here.
