May Trail Highlight: Buck Mountain
Winthrop sunshine, zippy descents through sagebrush and balsam root, and expansive views of the Methow Valley are waiting for riders at May’s trail highlight: Buck Mountain.
Located just a few miles north of Winthrop, Buck Mountain’s trail melts out in early May, offering a ride window that extends through late November. However, with Balsam Root present and cows currently absent, now is the time to ride (both conditions will change come early June).
While some singletrack remains slightly muddy, riders are sure to find some hero dirt as the trail weaves through valley forest, open fields, and rocketing meadow descents. Pack a lunch and a camera since you’ll want to hit the brakes once you crest the top.
Access to the ride begins near the MVSTA Cub Creek Trailhead, just a ~6mi shot from downtown Winthrop to Okanogan National Forest. From downtown take HWY 20 west for 0.2 mi and turn right onto the West Chewuch Rd. Follow this road 5.7 miles to Cub Creek Rd (on left). Turn left and follow for 1.7 miles where parking is available on the left. Learn more about this ride or submit a trail report here.
