April Trail Highlight: Cold Creek
For sharp ascents, challenging downhill, and gorgeous views of Mount Saint Helens and Silver Star Mountain, check out April’s trail highlight—Cold Creek. With quick (but steep) access to beautiful scenery just 25 minutes from Vancouver and one hour from the east side of Portland, it’s not surprising this is one of the area’s most popular sections of the Tarbell trail system.
Sitting on some of the best dirt in Washington, Cold Creek consists of packed Cascade Clay under the needles from top to bottom. Enjoy the tack on your tires and take solace in the serenity of burbling streams as you begin your climb--because Cold Creek will test your cardio chops. There is no easy way up this hill. Just the same, local regulars are frequently seen on after-work laps (with lights), or combining the Cold Creek trail with Thrillium, Bells Mountain, or Chinook for epic weekend rides.
At 3481 feet—the trail’s peak, the views are decisively alpine and rugged, and make the climbing worth your while. You’ll get a good look at treeless flanks down to 2000 feet, a lingering result of the 1902 Yacolt Burn, the largest forest fire in Washington State history.
On the downhill rollable obstacles abound, with the trail descending through multiple root falls, rock gardens, and numerous natural features that keep you looking ahead and down every site line. But 120mm riders and hard tailers needn’t fear—trail builders have provided roll-arounds for substantial features.
With the majority of the trail rideable year-round (as long as it isn’t under snow), the top section offers the best riding late March through December—making now the time to ride. A Discover Pass is required at the trailhead, and be sure to log a trip report for those of us who can’t make it out this weekend!
