Meet Barbara: Chasing New Trails and Building Skills With Us Through Her 70's
“What is more fun than coaching someone on a mission to ride ALL THE TRAILS?! nothing.”
That's how our Education Manager Heather DeChoudens introduced us to Barbara, a mountain biker in her 70's chasing new experiences, and, in Heather's words, “with the youngest of hearts.”
Barbara came to Heather about a year ago to progress her riding and explore new places. They began at Duthie Hill, and since then have continued lessons and exploring trails throughout the region, including Soaring Eagle, Big Finn Hill, and Trek at Tehaleh.
For Barbara, riding is about much more than getting from point A to point B.
“It brings out the smiles of playing and learning,” she says. “No two trails are the same and the geography of where one can ride is amazing.”
Barbara tells us that when she's traveling out of state with her husband, she's always thinking about her next ride. “When traveling my husband plays golf and I will reach out to the local Mt Bike Alliance in the area for a coach to share the biking experience of their hometown.”
Evergreen helped inspire that approach to exploring new places.
“Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance was my inspiration to ride in other states,” Barbara says.
Working with Heather has given Barbara the opportunity to build skills while branching out to new zones and different types of trails. As Heather puts it, “Having a coach familiar with location and riding ability- being able to target foundational skills, build confidence and get a tour all in one package.”
Their sessions have covered everything from “Cornering skills” and “Passive & active pumping” to “Wheel lift variations to help with climbing.” But Heather says Barbara brings just as much enthusiasm to the process as she does effort.
“Barbs willingness to try NEW things and make adjustments is impressive!”
Between sessions, Barbara keeps traveling, meeting riders and friends, and finding new trails to explore.
She tells us: “There are no rules to age when you are having fun on your bike.”
YES, Barbara! We can't agree more.
Barbara's story is a reminder that there are so many ways to ride, so many places to explore, and always something new to learn. As Heather says, “There are so many ways to ride a bike. There are so many places to ride your bike. There are so many varieties of bike riding. Biking looks different for each individual person and I love it. Own your own journey.”
Evergreen's education program offers private lessons and group clinics to help riders build skills and confidence, whether they are just getting started or looking to progress their riding. Explore our classes and clinics.
Barbara, we can't wait to see where the next trail takes you!
