Hot Diggity: Women’s Dig Series Launched
Last Saturday, 20 ladies participated in the first of several women-only dig days—the Hot Diggity Series. The conditions on Tiger Mountain were sunny and dry, perfect for carving out more of the new adrenaline-inducing descending trail opening this summer.
And carve they did—the lady diggers made 300+ feet of progress in just four hours! The shoveling and sweat were rewarded with lunch, beer and even some raffle prizes before the riding began. Hard tail 29ers, 6-inch trail bikes, and some beefed-up downhill bikes started off the shuttle fest on the not-quite-finished trail.
So what would inspire someone to spend a sunny Saturday digging dirt? According to Saturday’s trail gnomes, there are a few reasons.
Some came out to a building day for a chance to test out new trails before they opened (being shuttled up to the start of the trail didn’t hurt either).
For others the day was a great way to get to know more women riders and have a fun time in the woods. “The best part was riding the new trail--it’s special.’ says Karen Omodt. But she does admit she signed up to hang out with her friends and take advantage of the shuttles.
The goal of the Hot Diggity Series is to assist the women already involved in trail building in encouraging others to join in - digging dirt, moving rocks and tackling nasty roots to build new trails is not something only guys do.
The series is being organized through Evergreen, with various groups hosting each event. This first dig day was hosted by Sturdy B Racing and Gregg’s Cycle, with Georgetown Brewing, Shimano and Rocky Mountain Bikes sponsoring lunch, beverages and raffle prizes.
Special thanks to Christina Chacharon of Chach Photography, who did triple duty - taking pictures, digging, and riding!
We hope to see you at the next Hot Diggity event on Saturday May 30th. More info on the Evergreen calendar.
