Expect more Weekday Timber Traffic on Tiger Mountain
If you were on Tiger Mountain today you may have noticed an increase in timber traffic on some of the access roads. As an informed rider and trail steward, you know that Tiger land is actually a working forest. And as a working forest, Tiger lands have been contracted for a recent logging project, so mountain bikers should expect more traffic on the roads this summer.
A thinning project (which begins today April 24) will last for most of this summer. This will likely mean heavy timber hauling traffic on the Main Tiger Mt. Road (#4000), but fortunately, that’s during weekdays only. Much of this hauling traffic will occur early morning until roughly 3PM daily. Note, however, that the contractor is allowed to haul till dark, so there are no guarantees for the post-5PM after work/ride crowd.
It’s important to remember that while we are fortunate enough to have such a great riding area, it is a working forest first, and we are still legally required to yield the road to vehicles. So be sure to show our friends at DNR how much we appreciate our partnership by giving way and being courteous.
Overall the harvest shouldn’t affect many MTB trails, but at some point (we’ll let you know) the Connector trail (which runs from the upper trailhead across to the Main Tiger Mt. lot) will be closed (for no longer than a month).
So remember to be a conscious rider, watch and listen for approaching vehicles, and yield! A smile and a wave go a long way, too.
