December Trail Highlight: Beacon Hill

Some problems are good problems—like getting snow after the summer we’ve had. But that can make mountain biking challenging—fortunately, Washingtonians have the option of heading east to this month’s Trail Highlight from Evergreen East: Beacon Hill!

Whether you’re traveling for the holidays or just feel like taking a road trip, you’ll find some fun riding that holds up to the wet weather on the newly rebuilt Beacon Hill.  With a modest 650’ of elevation gain, 90% single track and 30 mountain biking trails winding through 1000 acres of public and private lands, it’s the perfect spot to enjoy some winter riding.

Often combined with Camp Sekani, this system consists of XC and some freeride trails—both staying true to their high desert geography (with a sandy quality unlike anywhere else in the state).  So watch that traction as you whip around corners.

While they do shed water well, trails can become too muddy, so be mindful of making more chores for the hardworking trail stewards over at Evergreen East. If the trails are too muddy, East challenges you to rent a fatbike and surge your adrenaline at Riverside State Park.

Always remember to be respectful of the work put into maintaining the trails you ride; if you’re doing significant damage, consider turning back and finding another ride. And check out our past list of good winter rides here. If you have any suggestions for list additions, email Bryan Rivard at
