August's Trail Highlight: Kachess Ridge
Not for the faint of heart, this route takes riders into the backcountry with a dogged climb offset by a winding singletrack descent though shadowy glades, open meadows of head-high wildflowers, and exposed ledges. Pair that with the breathtaking scenery of the Northern Cascades, Lake Kachess, Mt. Rainier, and Mt. Steward and you’ve got this month’s trail highlight: Kachess Ridge.
Generally not rideable until June or July due to snow, Kachess Ridge is now opened and ready for riding! Steel yourself for a forest road climb up and a touch of hike-a-bike before pointing yourself downhill for more than an hour of glorious descent.
An area with plenty of winter blowdowns, the trail currently has only a few downed trees (with established walk-arounds). Several creek-crossings also add some fun to the descent; prepare yourself for the potential of wet feet, and be especially mindful of crossings if your ride is post-rain.
Getting to the Kachess Ridge is an easy jaunt off if I-90 at exit #70 (see the Evergreen Trail Guide for expanded directions as well as potential shuttle options). This is a great window to check out an epic ride—don’t miss out and remember to submit a trail report for your fellow riders!
