Great all day ride!
Parked at the Big Creek Campground off of 52. Rode up 52 to FS 84, to 8440, before picking up the trail. Fireroad climb was 11.8 miles, and 2200ft. Since there was a work party last weekend, trail was clear all the way across. Not too many views going across the ridge, but it was a great ride. Enough roots to keep things interesting. The last climb (marked as "climb to saddle" on strava) is pretty brutal. There is a sand hike-a-bike right in the middle of it. The trail will eventually come very close to a fireroad and then cut to the left. I recommend just pushing out to the fireroad and continuing up that, as you wont missing anything on the trail (maybe 300 meters worth) and its fairly overgrown, to the point where its almost impossible to ride even if you had inclination to try to ride it. The trail at this point links into the fireroad anyways, and finishes up the climb. At this point, you can start the descent, or ride up the fireroad another 400 meters or so. There will be a large rock outcropping up to your left, and I highly recommend taking the time to get off the bike, and do the short climb to the top of this for the best views of the whole ride, with amazing shots of Rainier and you could even see Adams fairly well. From there, its an incredible descent all the way down to the campground. There wasnt a single tree or anything in the way the whole way down, and it was smooth and fast, broken up by some tight switchbacks. Its a challenging but great ride! Grab the .gpx here.
