Top 5 XC ride in WA

Been doin this loop since the early 90's. Too bad its so far for us north enders to get to but defiantely worth your while to make the trip at least once a year. I've never done it counter clockwise and don't understand why people would want to and miss out on that awesome northback downhill. We parked at the horse camp as usual (Northwest forest pass req) and headed across the blacktop for the grind up the fire road. This is a decent grade that doesn't kill you if you're in decent cardio shape. We got a later than usual start and ran into a lot of hikers as we got close to the ski resort. Most were friendly as were we. Once you get onto Single Track (ST) the "fun" starts soon thereafter with a fairly constant climb on loose rocky stuff for a while (I gave up ride monitors years ago in favor of having fun). Unless you are Superman you will be hike a biking a fare bit of this ST until you get to the alpine lakes and meadows area. This has always been one my favorite parts of the ride with the lakes and winding mostly smooth trail. There were no skeeters that day which is a bit unusual from memories past. Again quite a few hikers in this area. I think the addition of Crystal's Gondola has increased the number of hikers significantly since they can hike up and ride down or visa versa. The climbing starts again as you enter the ski area crossing access roads and working your way up trail towards the Bear Pits. Some hike a biking as you get up into the bottom of Silver Queen. Had some snacks and took in the view of what we'd climbed. Gorgeous! The climb continues on ST for a couple switch backs then on to the access road for the Summit. Lots of hikers mostly coming down from their Gondola ride looking at my sweat pouring as if I must be completely mad! My legs were getting pretty toasted on the last 1/4 to the summit (I'm no spring chicken!) so I lamed out and walked again. Hit the summit intersection at Green Valley where my buddy the lung boy was waiting (he's no spring chicken either but rides a million miles per year more than I do). The summit area is littered with tourista's and hikers. The thought of going to the Summit joint for food quickly passed and we headed for the Northback salivating with thoughts of buttery ST. The hiker numbers quickly petered out as we headed farther along the ridge. Quite a bit of baby powder dirt this time of year that can catch you off guard. Once the downhill switch backs start they seem to go on forever! Just an awesome downhill and why you must do this loop clockwise unless you're a masochist.
