September Trail Highlight: Ranger Creek
Since you’ve spent the summer biking (into tip-top shape!), why not test yourself on a grunt-worthy climb with challenging, technical singletrack? If winding though beautiful forests, down fun descents, and around crazy switchbacks that will challenge even the most advanced riders sounds good to you, check out September’s Trail Highlight: Ranger Creek.
From the Buck Creek parking lot make a few turns (checking the Trail Guide prior is worth it) and begin a steady climb up the drainage to Little Ranger Peak, which offers a viewpoint just a short hike off the trail at about the 3 mile mark. In another two miles of forested riding, reach the shelter, and continue on to Dalles Ridge trail—if you’re in the mood, continue on to Corral Pass or out to the Palisades lookout (going left takes you to FR7250). There are multiple options for riders who choose to carry on.
If you’re out for a quick jaunt, then turn around, open that travel, and enjoy the descent. The fun and (sometimes tricky) terrain will command your attention, but remember to watch out for other bikers, hikers, and sometimes horsemen who may be ascending on this two-way trail. And as always, remember to avoid skidding through or cutting switchbacks.
Ranger Creek can also be combined with Noble Knob, Palisades (with Rainier views that will blow your mind), Skookum Flats and White River to make a top-notch mountain ride—check the trail guide and recent ride reports for conditions and loop suggestions.
A NW Forest Pass is required for parking, but this can be purchased in the nearby the town of Greenwater (also home to Naches Tavern for burgers and beer, and Wapiti Woolies for maps and ice cream).
