June 2015 Trail Highlight: Hansen Ridge
It’s still got snow on it, right? Welcome to 2015, the year of the mountain bike. Like other trails in the region, Hansen Ridge has shed her winter coat and welcomes riders to her rocky, medium-technical trails with big views, challenging climbs, and the potential of a mid-ride dip in the lake.
The first segment in the new South Fork Snoqualmie riding area, a project Evergreen has been working on for 15 years, Hansen Ridge currently offers 18 miles of great singletrack and doubletrack riding. Forming an inverted lollipop from the trailhead to Harris Lake and back, the trail will eventually (as funds become available) be a part of a 30-mile network Evergreen ultimately aims to create in partnership with the US Forest Service and Mountains to Sounds Greenway.
The standard route for first time riders is an 8-mile out-and-back, resulting in about 1300ft of climbing. While the trail is a bit loose in places and can have a tendency to choss up in drier weather, the flow of solid trail building makes up for any additional bumps. In the hotter weather, a dip is not a bad decision on this ride, as the majority of the climb is exposed.
Before setting off for this beautiful ride on US Forest Land, be sure to get navigation info on the trail guide here, as it takes a few twists and turns to find the trailhead (but once you do it’s obvious). And while shooting within 150’ of the trailhead it now illegal, you will likely still pass several shooting pit on the way up the Hansen Ridge.
