July 2015 Trail highlight: Angel’s Staircase
How does riding some of the highest singletrack in Washington State sound? If you’re up for the challenge, then get ready to earn your turns on July’s Trail Highlight: Angel’s Staircase/Cooney Lake.
Boasting epic views, two alpine lakes, and some of the highest bikeable altitudes around, Angel’s Staircase offers rewards after plenty of hard work. You’ll spend a lot of time climbing over 5,000’ of vertical on this classic loop, with sustained pedaling at 7,000’, ascending to as high as 8,000 feet in places.
Consisting of 100% singletrack, the 25-mile loop covers the spectacular Cooney Lake and Horsehead pass, with intermitted loose, rocky conditions as well as occasional hike-a-bike sections. The majority of riders agree that the loop is more enjoyable in a clockwise direction, and average ride times are 5-8 hours. Given the irregular dryness of the season, be sure to carry plenty of food and water, and give yourself ample time to complete the ride safely.
