METHOW CHAPTER EVERGREEN MOUNTAIN BIKE ALLIANCE
What a difference a week makes. We hope you’ve been enjoying the cooler temperatures, cleaner air and even some wet dirt(!). Trails in the Methow have been excellent this last week and we’re looking forward to some prime fall riding. But despite August's heat and smoke there’s a lot of good work to share, and we’re not done yet!
 
Help Us Finish Goldilocks in September
 
The Methow Valley's first purpose-built green trail, Goldilocks, offers long sweeping descents, epic views and a multitude of new ways to loop the Loup. The trail will be almost four miles in length and provide an easy climb from the Loup base area to Bear Pass and the beginning of Telemark. The top mile of Goldilocks is now open for exploration and is a great representation of the miles to come.
 
Thanks to long hours from our crew we have just over a mile of excavator work to go. But it’s going to be a push to complete the finishing work before the larches turn to gold and snow flies. We have three volunteer Dig Days on Goldilocks coming up in September and we could use all the help we can get!
 
This Saturday, September 5 (Labor Day Weekend)

We're hosting a big Dig - Ride Weekend the last weekend of September. Come for one day or camp for the weekend; dig in the mornings, ride in the afternoons. We’ll have some food and beverages to share. Lend a hand and let’s get it done!
 

We will be meeting at the Loup Loup Ski Bowl parking lot each morning at 9 a.m. The excavator has already cut most of the trail – our work will be to pull flagging, cut out roots, and rake out the tread to make it ready to ride. Camping will be available in the Loup parking lot.

Woodpecker Rework at Sun Mountain
 
Our crew is also moving dirt at Sun Mountain this month. We have a second excavator reworking and extending the top mile of Woodpecker near Thompson Pass. This significant upgrade to a classic trail should be complete by the end of September.
 
We’re also continuing to clear new downfall like the pile below, but using hand saws due to current fire restrictions. Please report any new issues via methowmaintenance@evergreenmtb.org. Thank you!
 
New Maps at Sun Mountain and Loup Loup
 
For the last couple of months Benj and Josh have been working on new MTB-optimized trail maps for the Methow. In collaboration with Methow Trails, we've developed a completely new map for the Sun Mountain summer trail system that indicates both ride difficulty and allowed use. (And yep, the Thompson Ridge trail has been reclassified as an intermediate blue, among other changes.) You'll find the new maps posted throughout the Sun Mountain system.
 
There’s also a new map of Loup Loup summer trails ready to go and you'll start to see these installed across Bear Mountain in the coming weeks, including at an informational kiosk at the base area. Huge thanks to Matt Dressler for the design and cartography, Adrienne Schaefer at Methow Trails, Bob Gleyre for printing, and Paul Smotherman for building kiosks.
