Public Invited to Participate in Collaboration Workshops about Wilderness
The Colville National Forest (Forest) will be hosting a series of public workshops this fall to help the agency evaluate Inventoried Roadless Areas (IRAs) within the Forest for their potential recommendation as wilderness. Evaluation of IRAs for potential wilderness recommendation is a required step in the forest plan revision process.
"It has been just over a year since a citizens group participated in an intensive public collaboration effort related to specificlements of the Colville Forest Plan Revision," said Rick Brazell, Colville Forest Supervisor. "Now that we are further along in the wilderness evaluation process, I'm looking forward to having more detailed public discussion. This will help further inform my decision on whether to recommend additional wilderness or not in the revised forest plan." said Brazell.
A "kick-off" public workshop will be held in Colville September 6, followed by a general information meeting in Spokane mid-month. Three Saturday community workshops are planned between September and November; one workshop in each county. A final meeting will be held in Colville to wrap up the process and integrate recommendations from the various workshops.
"The collaborative workshops will be open to all members of the public, not just to those individuals who participated in the previous effort. To honor past collaborative public discussions on wilderness, we'll be incorporating information gained from the 2007 Collaborative Round-Up in this process" said Margaret Hartzell, Forest Plan Revision Team Leader.
"Each community workshop will evaluate a specific set of IRAs within each geographic area. We encourage people within and outside of these communities to participate in this collaborative process," Hartzell said.
For additional information, including meeting notes and public recommendations from the 2007 round of collaboration workshops and a list of recommended reading to prepare for the 2008 workshops, visit the Forest Plan Revision web page at www.fs.fed.us/r6/wenatchee/forest-plan.
Meeting agendas will be posted soon. A draft of the revised forest plan is targeted for release to the public in March 2010. If you have any questions about the meetings, please contact Debbie Kelly, Public Affairs Specialist at (509) 826-3396.
