New Mountain Bike Trails Coming on Tiger Mountain

We will be re-routing a significant section of the upper East Tiger Mountain Trail and extending the trail to the top of the East Tiger Summit, reaching 3,003’ elevation. This upper section of East Tiger Mtn Trail was previously regarded as an "unmaintained trail" and the re-route is needed to correct poor initial trail design and a steep average grade which is causing deep ruts, water damage, and soil erosion. Once work is completed, possibly by spring, the renamed East Tiger Summit trail (connecting Preston RR Grade Trail to the East Tiger Mtn Summit) will be designated as multi-use for hiker and biker! The existing section of East Tiger Mt Trail from Preston RR Grade Trail travelling north towards West Tiger Mtn Natural Resources Conservation Area, will remain closed to mtn bikes, and it is important to adhere to this designation!

The re-route will provide mountain bikers with additional mileage, 500' more vertical, and a single-track connection from the actual summit of East Tiger to the west (upper) end of the Preston RR Grade Trail. Emphasis will be on a sustainable trail design allowing for travel in both directions while incorporating the kind of elements that make trails fun for cross country mountain biking. The East Tiger Mountain Trail re-route project will be overseen by DNR and implemented by Evergreen with some help from the Washington Trails Association (WTA).

Before we start this project we need to address some maintenance issues on the Preston RR Grade Trail. Evergreen will be holding work parties this fall and winter and DNR is supplying oversight, materials, and equipment, including an excavator. We will be performing critical reconstruction of areas on the trail that have sustained damage from erosion or that are at risk of failure from heavy water flow.

Evergreen has committed to adopting the maintenance of the East Tiger Mtn Trail section from the Preston RR Grade Trail to the East Tiger Summit and has also renewed its commitment to the maintenance of the Preston RR Grade Trail. Adopt-a-trail agreements are especially crucial at a time when the DNR is facing budget cuts and has very little funding for maintenance of its current trail system.

We need your help in order to meet the commitment of the mountain biking community to Tiger Mountain and make new trails a reality. Watch the calendar for work parties and sign up to help with the Preston maintenance work and then the East Tiger reroute work. This is an opportunity to build trail – by bikers for bikers.
