The Trail Builder I (TB I) – Backcountry Maintenance's primary function is to work with Evergreen staff and volunteers to maintain trails at Evergreen project sites throughout the Colville National Forest in Northeastern Washington State. This position requires strong trail-building, communication, volunteer organizational skills, and the ability to effectively communicate with a volunteer crew to complete a trail work project. A passion for mountain biking and the outdoors is a must. Work will occur on weekdays and weekends and in all weather.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with Evergreen staff, volunteer site leads, Project Managers, and the local Chapter representative on various trail maintenance activities.
  • Ensure work is performed according to objectives and standards outlined in the project scope.
  • Communicate work progress and issues to the site lead or Project Manager when necessary..
  • Ensure hand tools are stocked, organized, and in good working order.
  • Administrative duties include updating and maintaining the Team Calendar, reading and responding to emails, and communicating in a professional and timely manner.
  • Assisting staff at volunteer work parties with equipment, tools, refreshments, sign-in sheets, and waivers.
  • Represent Evergreen and the sport of mountain biking in a positive, professional manner.
  • Assist with other responsibilities as needed.

Employment Requirements

  • Ability to work hard and stay on task with minimal oversight.
  • A strong desire to learn trail maintenance and trail-building skills while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • A high level of strength is not necessary, but endurance and fitness are critical.
  • Being able to work in cold and wet weather conditions while maintaining good team spirit.
  • Ability to be self-sufficient away from modern amenities for up to 5 days at a time while camping at developed campgrounds as well as dispersed campsites.
  • Valid driver's license, clean driving record and reliable personal vehicle that can tolerate rough backcountry roads.
  • A nationwide background check through DataQuest is conducted as part of our standard hiring process. Candidates can discuss any results during the hiring process.

As a lean non-profit organization with a small team, additional duties may be assigned beyond what is listed above according to the organization's needs. Hours are flexible, with evening and weekend work.

Primary Location:  Colville National Forest

Reports To:  Michael McLane, Trails Program Manager – Eastern Washington

Classification:  Non-Exempt. Hourly.

Department:  Trail Team

Term:  Seasonal – May – October (depending on snow)

Benefits: 15 days accrued paid time off (PTO), a $1,500.00 annual continued education reimbursement, workers compensation coverage, $200/year reimbursement for personal work wear, optional 401K plan, mileage reimbursement at the federal rate and $55/day per diem reimbursement.

Hours:  Max 40 hours/week

Compensation: $19-$22/hour, depending on experience and qualifications.

Start Date:  May 1st, 2024.

Employment Agreement Conditions and Duration

This position can be ended at any time, subject to work availability and funding. Due to extenuating circumstances, unpaid days off may be possible. The position description and employment agreement details are subject to change at the discretion of Evergreen Management.
